Hurricane Season is Coming -- Is Your Car Ready?
So you’ve got the flashlights, food, water, hand-crank radio and everything else you need for your home when the hurricanes come. Is your vehicle road-ready, though? Here’s a quick checklist:
Battery: Make sure your battery’s in good shape with plenty of cranking power. That includes testing your alternator, inspecting your serpentine belt and making sure there’s no corrosion built up on the battery terminals and cables.
Wipers: It’s self-explanatory, really, but lots of people forget about their wipers. Even the best wipers only have about a year’s service life. If yours are chipped, cracked, dried-out or losing strips of rubber, replace them.
Tires: Make sure your tires are fully inflated and in good shape.
Lights: Again, self-explanatory. Make sure all headlights and taillights are in good working order.
Make sure you’ve got a good go-bag in your vehicle, with high-protein snacks, rain gear, cash, a cell phone or a power bank for your phone, a first-aid kit and maybe some games or crossword puzzles for the kids in case you end up stranded or stuck in traffic. Don’t drive into deep water! You can’t see what’s ahead of you and can end up in the ditch, or your engine can take in water and seize…or worse yet, your vehicle can easily get swept away in fast-moving water.
We all hope that things don’t get too rough this year, but it’s best to be prepared if they do. Watch the news and weather closely and be ready for a quick bugout if the authorities say so.
